Went in a few weeks ago to have the experts look at my Toshiba laptop and give an estimate on repair. Wait was not bad for a walk in (45 minutes) and techs were knowledgable and helpful. I ended up buying a new laptop, an Apple MacBook Air which I love. The staff was helpful and knew what they were doing and what they were talking about. The manager made sure to thank me before I left and contacted me later to see if I was satisfied with my purchase. This is definitely my go to place for computer needs and questions. The only reason it's not a five star is the brief interaction with a few staff members during the hour and a half I was there. Four out of five is 80% but I'd give them a 4.5 or 90% overall. Love their selection of electronic odds and ends. Managed to find a kit for sewing LEDs into clothes, and also walked away with a shiny new Arduino kit. Was surprised the prices were actually on-par with or better than online which almost never happens when you factor in the ridiculously crazy Brentwood sales tax. It's Microcenter. Fuck yea, Microcenter! That rainbow Raspberry Pi case was calling my name.CAAALLING. I was disappointed they didn't have conductive thread on spools sold individually and no accelerometers either, but I forgive them. I haven't shopped here. I took my computer here on the recommendation from the Apple store. We had an AWFUL experience. So bad I will never be back and I am telling people I know to never go. We check in our computer and it wasn't explained we had to leave it with them.but we do this is Saturday night. They say we will call you by 7:00 Monday Night and let you know either way whats going on. Monday at 7:00 comes and goes no call. So I call them.well my tech is out. I say not a big deal just if you say you are going to call please do. We have now been with out our computer for a few days we are very anxious to know whats going on and can they fix it. He finally calls me back and says sorry he's been busy. I told him thats fine I totally understand but a call would have been nice. He says he'll try and get to it.ok. He calls back the next day whatever he tried first didn't work. He's going to order in a part and try that. I ask him if he thinks it'll work and he laughs and tells me not to get my hopes up. I do NOT find this funny or a laughing matter. This is my computer and time and money. Thursday night we get the next call he says theres nothing he can do come get out computer we can discuss options. We go to get our computer there a HUGE a line. We just want our computer they can't fix. I think a worker picked up on our vibe and said if you just picking up I'll grab it for you. He can't find it!? They have to track down the tech and at which point we now have to talk to this guy. They keep trying to explain what they went through when we don't care we had already decided we have liked anything about this whole situation and we want another opinion but we listen. He is talking about sending it off and paying $1800 - we are like no thank you we want a second opinion and he is flippant and goes i wouldn't go with cut rate services.and I explain to him I am not talking about cut rate services I want some one to start over I want a second opinion on the ENTIRE THING. Then customer service guy was like is this your first time here? We said yes, he goes you don't seem to happy? I told him we weren't. We just want out computer what else do we need to do and he was like hold on I am not sure.another manager guy close by was like you're fine just go. WE COULD NOT GET OUT OF THERE FAST ENOUGH! THEN we go directly to Mac HQ on Manchester where we were treated politely and professionally and they fixed out computer for $60 and in 2 days. Mac HQ has my business for life and I will NEVER go back to Mico Center for anything. I feel fortunate to have a MC here in STL! Great prices and selection of computer parts. They have everything from shiny pre-built computers and laptops for non-technical consumers to all the goodies for the hardware geeks and gamers. Their Knowledge Bar reps are very technically savvy, but since it is a free service, be prepared to for a wait as they are in demand by every grandmother who can't log into her email. On the upside, your grandmother who can't get into her email has a place that can help! The build-your-own department is where MC really shines, IMO. The people there are super helpful and knowledgeable about compatibility and options when you decide to take the plunge and build your own custom PC. From processors, to ram, motherboards, and water cooling components, MC has it all. I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but I had to for Micro Center in Brentwood as I had a very negative experience with my repair there. Upon check in, I felt like my concerns were not taken seriously. I can't remember who my representative was, but it was an older gentleman. To be quite frank he came across as pretty apathetic and did not explain the check in/diagnostic process to me at all until I have half way through signing my forms. Then, this is a bit irrelevant to the repair, but when my debit card wouldn't swipe correctly upon check in, the same guy singled me out, had me call my bank (which is embarrassing enough when you are holding up the line), only to find out it was their card reader equipment causing the problem all along. If only we had tried another computer to complete the transaction in the first place (as I suggested) I wouldn't have felt already completely dissatisfied with my Micro center experience. The repair process was excruciating. I am a full time student in the middle of summer classes, the guy I checked my computer in with said it would be a quick fix. Micro center's model of assigning a single tech to your device throughout the entire repair process is NOT SUSTAINABLE. My 'tech' only worked half the week. I didn't even know what was wrong with my computer until it had already been in their possession for a week and a half! When I finally got my tech on the phone (a whole other challenge) he informed me it was a quick internal cord replacement that would be done in 30 minutes (and honestly something I definitely could have done myself for a lot cheaper had I known anything about computers). And of course he left his shift early that day or something and I wasn't able to pick it up until the next time he worked another few days later. Sure I'm an entitled college student, but being in the midst of summer session finals, I did not at all get a sense of urgency, never felt like I even had an opportunity to voice my concerns, sensed a general air of apathy and rudeness from the staff there, etc. At Micro Center. Not to mention my repair was $100+ for something that I probably could've done for $30, but that's besides the point. I have and will continue to warn many of my friends and fellow students from area universities about taking their devices there. I just got totally ripped off and I'm so upset. I will never shop there again and I will put on my blog and on my Facebook page that no one should ever buy anything from the Micro Center. They're just out to make money off of people and not provide good customer service. So less than three months ago I went in and purchased an HP printer for full price and I purchased the $49.99 2 year warranty. Well low and behold the printer is a piece of crap and so I took it in today to exchange it for another one and was informed that I'd have to pay an additional $49.99 to extend and get a new warranty. Are you kidding me? I already paid that. I asked to speak to the manager and was told tough luck and that's the way they do it. Why should I have to pay for a new warranty when I paid for the original one? I see no rhyme or reason aside from them just trying to make an extra 50 bucks off of me. Perhaps they should consider carrying a line of printers that actually work and I don't break. I might also say that while I was in line to other people also came in with HP printers that were faulty and returning them because they were no good. I'll never shop here again and I suggest you don't either. The first time I had my Mac serviced at Micro Center it was great. I had more memory added, no problem. So, when my Mac was slowing down I thought it might be a battery issue. I took it to Micro Center. My battery was replaced, but I was told, 'Yeah, probably is the issue.' It took four hours. I watched the tech after three hours of waiting and saw he had his hand over the top of my Mac and was messing around the back corner. Odd place for a battery replacement. He kept leaving and returning for some odd reason. When I took it home the top wouldn't stay in place. This wasn't right, but I thought Micro Center was full of 'professionals.' Sometime later a girlfriend of mine said, 'They BROKE your laptop!' It never occurred to me that they would do such a thing. Recently, when my laptop wouldn't charge, I took my Mac to a different service store for possible repair. One, when I described the battery issue to this employee, he gave me a strange look. He said, 'A slow Mac is not an indication of a bad battery.' I was duped into replacing my 'good' battery for an issue not related to a slow Mac. Second, the employee asked me if I wanted my Mac to be looked at and if it was just a loose screw, he would tighten it for free. I said, yes please. He looked at it and it was a much larger problem. After further investigation it turned out that the screw was broken in half and in all the 20 years of working in the field he has never ever seen anything like this before. The entire top half of the screw was broken off and nothing was holding my top on to the bottom of the computer. He also said the fact that the employee at Micro Center was messing around the top of my Mac was odd considering that had nothing to do with the area of the battery. The tech who replaced my battery at Micro Center broke the screw in half and attempted to find some way of covering up the fact that he damaged my laptop. No wonder the top flopped around all this time! In the end I didn't need a battery replacement and he broke my laptop in the process. My girlfriend WAS correct! I will never go back to Micro Center ever again. One bad employee does ruin the whole experience because you never know who you will get and it could be that one bad one who is going to drop your laptop or over tighten the screw with an electric drill or however he broke it and charge you for something you never needed in the first place a new battery which was not the cause of the slow down in the first place! Five stars for the first employee who installed the extra memory which I did need and minus five stars for the second employee who gouged me for the battery I didn't need and for breaking my laptop. Two stars over all, One thing for sure, I will never ever be going back there ever again for anything, not even for a pen. I always like going to Micro Center. To me, it's the best computer store around. The only thing that comes close to competing is Fry's, which is not in this part of the country, but Micro Center is physically nicer. Anyway, at this store, you can get anything you need for your computer. I went there recently to pick up a new hard drive for my computer. They had larger hard drives for less than Best Buy, and unlike BB, they actually had them in stock. They have tons of things you can use to upgrade your computer or to build your own from scratch. They also have any kind of accessory you could possibly need - mice, keyboards, cables, ink, you name it. They also sell whole computers; it's where I got mine. When they didn't have exactly what I wanted, they offered to sell me something close then add the extra stuff I needed, and all in less than an hour! In addition to all the computer stuff, they also have some camera gear, headphones, computer games and books and some other things. If you go, make sure you get on their mailing list. Every so often they will give you a coupon for a free memory card or thumb drive. Most recently I got a free 32 GB thumb drive. If you need anything for your computer, I recommend checking out Micro Center. I used to enjoy coming here and I do IF it is not for a return. There is usually only one employee at the return desk. Friendly though they may be if it takes my lunch hour to return something it just isn't worth my time. They have become big sellers of underwhelming monitors and over priced accessories. I had gone in to price match NewEgg (what they advertise in the store) with something. On their website it said to check store for inventory. So I called and waited and waited and waited, Decided to burn some time and head down. Not only did they not have it was told that if they special ordered it they would not price match. So, ordering it basically online at MC was going to be more costly than NewEgg. Oh well, off to the Internets for me. I think MC has outlived it usefulness for me. I find enough bits and pieces online and have not run across where I need something NOW. Well, this place is a catch 22. Here's why: The Good: Great prices Great selection Helpful staff on THE SALES FLOOR The Bad: The people at checkout are terrible. It seems they either don't know store Why do you have such unprofessional people working checkout and leaving a bad taste in the mouths of customers as they leave. The last three times I checked out, the woman behind the counter was rude and argued about a sale or incentive. As I stood there, I could hear another woman checking someone out and being just as rude. The poor manager looked like he was frazzled trying to put out all the fires started by his checker staff. My opinion.fire them and find friendlier staff. You are competing against Amazon.and they are winning for just that reason!!! You have to make it pleasant or we will just point.click.and sit back with a smile of satisfaction knowing we have not been demeaned, yelled at or made to feel stupid. I have purchased probably 5 computers there and have always had a helpful considerate sales professional. In fact, a manager has always approached me to ensure I had no questions. I do compare big time and if it is not cheaper I don't get it. They always beat other's prices even online. The cashiers are just that. Don't ask them any info. They are not professional what so ever. I did have a brief service question several times and the guys at the help desk are incredible. These people that talk about rudeness must walk in there a crab. I am a middle aged lady so there is no ulterior interests I am sure. Always a great experience for me.
